Seatrade Cruise News top ‘20 under 40’ finalists announced at Seatrade Cruise Med 2018

A global search for cruising’s top 20 under 40s came to an exciting conclusion today as the winners of Seatrade Cruise News 20 Under 40 were announced at Seatrade Cruise Med 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The winners were announced during a ceremony at Seatrade Cruise Med; which saw the final 20 successful individuals announced and those attending the event receive a special commemorative trophy and an invite to join the stage for a short interview with two members of the judging panel – Mary Bond, Managing Director of Publishing, Seatrade and Craig Milan, VP Itinerary Planning & Destination Development, Virgin Voyages.

In a special speech, Mary highlighted those in the audience that made the top 40 before it was whittled down to 20 finalists.

In its inaugural year, Seatrade Cruise News 20 under 40 enjoyed global participation and attracted nearly 100 entries in its search for the top 20 young talents from the cruise industry. The entries were firstly narrowed down to a top 40 shortlist and announced in August, with the top 20 kept a closely-guarded secret until today.

“Both the volume and standard of entries this competition received has been truly outstanding; which made selecting the Top 20 winners a difficult task” said Bond. “Each individual who was nominated should be extremely proud of not just themselves; but the future they are helping to ensure for cruise. It’s so encouraging to see so much young talent build; maintain and innovate this thriving and exciting industry.”

Seatrade Cruise Med moves to Málaga, Spain in 2020

Seatrade Cruise Med - the largest cruise industry event focussed on the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas - will move to Málaga, Spain, in 2020 it was announced today on the final day of the event in Lisbon, Portugal.

Seatrade Cruise Med will take place in Málaga from 15-17th September 2020 at Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Málaga (Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Málaga). The event will be hosted by Port of Málaga; Andalucia; Costa del Sol and City of Málaga.

A Mediterranean port with nearly 3000 years of history, Málaga will become the 13th destination to host Seatrade Cruise Med which is held biennially in different locations around the Mediterranean and includes an international exhibition, detailed conference programme and excellent networking opportunities.

According to Vanessa Stephens, Global Events Director of Seatrade, organisers of the event: “We are delighted to announce today that the next destination for Seatrade Cruise Med is Málaga, the capital city of the Costa del Sol.

“We have visited the magnificent Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Málaga and know that the 2020 event will be an exciting destination to work with thanks to the efforts of the hosts.”

An ideal cruise destination, Málaga is strategically located in southern Spain between the provinces of Granada and Cadiz, and nearby the provinces of Seville, Cordoba and Granada, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Currently regarded as one of Europe’s best access points by land, sea and air, Málaga was awarded Europe’s best shore destination in 2015, supported by one of the best climates in Europe as it enjoys more than 325 days of sunshine each year.

Malaga Cruise Port manages all three cruise terminals of the Port of Malaga which is located just 15 minutes away from Malaga International Airport, which offers flights to and from Europe and all around the world making Malaga’s port facilities, hotels and airport a truly world-class international homeport.

The three cruise terminals: Terminal A, Terminal B and the Palm Grove Terminal allow Malaga to receive cruise ships of any sizes from all over the world. Larger cruise liners dock in the eastern area and smaller cruise ships dock at the inner basin next to the Palm Grove waterfront, which is within five minute’s walking distance to the cathedral. There are full turnaround and transit services as well as a small shopping center offering duty free and souvenir shopping. A shuttle service to the city center is also in operation.

All three terminals have been designed with the latest requirements concerning safety and security in mind, and each fully complies with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code). Terminal A is equipped with two boarding bridges specially designed for a new generation of ships and has already hosted some of the world’s biggest cruise ships, such as Genesis from RCCL and Dream Class from Carnival. Terminal B has a modern boarding bridge and offers full turnaround and transit services while The Palm Grove Terminal is designed to operate small and mid-sized ships up to 200 m and is located in the heart of the city center.

Seatrade Cruise Awards Winners Announced

The winners of the Seatrade Cruise Awards 2018 were announced this evening as part of the Seatrade Cruise Med Welcome Reception held at Páto da Galé in Lisbon, Portugal.

The awards were presented by Mary Bond, Managing Director Publishing & Content, Seatrade, alongside Ingo Soerensen, Area VP, Global Cruise Sales, Oracle Hospitality - Principal Sponsor of the Seatrade Cruise Awards. According to Mary, the awards had received a record number of entries – over 100 – and reflected the global reach of the award scheme.

Now in the 12th edition, the Seatrade Cruise Awards celebrate the best of international cruise industry success, ambition and innovation. For 2018, six industry awards were supported by three personality awards, including: Seatrade Outstanding Contribution Award; Seatrade Port Personality of the Year and Seatrade Cruise Personality of the Year, which was sponsored by V Ships Leisure Ltd.

Following the announcement of the industry awards, Mary Bond presented the three Personality Awards. First to be called to the stage was the winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award - Fred Danska, Director Cruise at Wartsila.

Speaking about Fred and his long career, Mary said: “He was among the first to extol the virtues of LNG as an environmentally friendly solution for cruise ships when it was still in its infancy and the company he represents is currently contracted to supply engines and gas cleaning systems for an exploration cruise ship under construction in China; dual-fuel engines for a luxury icebreaker with electric hybrid system powered by LNG building in Europe and various cruise new building projects with smart nautical and technical systems.”

Next to be welcomed to the stage was the Seatrade Port Personality for 2018, Betty MacMillan, Cruise Development Manager, Port Saint John, who was awarded, amongst other career highlights spanning 30 years, for her efforts to grow the port’s seasonal business to close to 200,000 passengers this year and is facing its best year ever in 2019 because of her determination and tireless efforts to develop and promote the Port and region.

The 3rd personality winner, Douglas Prothero, CEO of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, joined the stage to much applause as he was named Seatrade Cruise Personality of the Year 2018, sponsored by V. Ships Leisure.

Mary told the audience: “In a career spanning from tall ships to adventure cruises, our personality is a captain, a hands-on boat builder, financier, philanthropist and a jazz musician. He has over 35 years of professional experience in the hospitality and maritime industry.

“As a seasoned entrepreneur, he founded numerous enterprises with lead responsibility for product development, sales, ship design, ship construction and marine operations.

“The common thread throughout all his businesses: a laser focus on the guest experience.

His energy is infectious I am told and he has labored five years to develop a new cruise brand which is currently building its first cruise yacht branded after a luxury hotel company. It will debut next year.”

The industry award winners, chosen by a panel of industry experts, were announced as:

  • Destination of the Year – Dubai, UAE
  • Port of the Year – Dublin Port
  • Supplier of the Year - ADELTE
  • Environmental Initiative Award – Port of Santo Domingo
  • Marketing Initiative of the Year, sponsored by Cruise Baltic – Discover Saint John
  • Innovative Shorex of the Year Award, sponsored by Abu Dhabi Department of Tourism and Culture – Rainforest Adventures St Maarten for The Flying Dutchman

Seatrade Cruise Med opens in Lisbon

Seatrade Cruise Med - the world’s largest cruise industry event focussed on the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas – opened today in Lisbon, Portugal and continues until Thursday 20th September at FIL – Lisbon Exhibition and Congress Centre.

Hosted by the Port of Lisbon Authority and supported by MedCruise and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the event features a showcase exhibition, conference and a full networking programme.  It is part of Portugal Shipping Week.

On the opening morning, Portugal’s Minister of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, addressed more than 350 delegates in her welcome speech and said it was an excellent opportunity for Portuguese companies to showcase themselves to the cruise industry and for all government, public entities and private stakeholders to work together to build the future.

Also taking to the stage as part of the welcome were: Vice President of the Municipality of Lisbon, Mr Duarte Cordeiro and Portugal Secretary of State for Tourism, Mrs Ana Mendes Godhino.

In his keynote, Airam Diaz Pastor, President, MedCruise & Commercial Director, Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife told the packed room that the Mediterranean is facing a bright future with more capacity arriving and more investment in port infrastructure.

Taking to the stage, Chairman, CLIA Europe & Chairman, Carnival UK, David Dingle spoke with his CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) hat and made mention to the fact that the state of the cruise industry is ‘very good indeed’.

He said: “Last year, 26.7 million cruises were taken the world over…6% growth over the previous year. Assuming occupancy levels remain broadly the same this year, over 28 million cruises will have been sold in 2018, a further 5% growth. European source market growth has continued steadily and if anything has been capacity-constrained due to the redeployment of some ships to Asia and other places. In 2017, 26% of global cruise sales were in Europe, but we comfortably predict that this will rise to 28% in 2018 and 2019 as more capacity begins to arrive.”

Looking at Europe specifically, he added: “Looking at Europe as a source market, a destination and an industrial hub, what is most impressive is the growth in the economic contribution of the European cruise industry – near on €48 billion in 2017, a 16.9% increase since the last survey in 2015.  That’s a phenomenal rise, and it comes from source market growth, more cruise operating activities in Europe and more cruise ship building, which has grown by more than 22% compared with 2015 as the order book has increased to record levels, a remarkable 66 new ships by 2021 worth almost €30 billion.

“With 7 million cruise sales in 2017, 8% more than 2015, Europe is the world’s second biggest source market.  Over 80% of those European sales were for cruises in Europe, and adding to these the numbers of Americans, Asians and Australians coming to Europe to cruise, 6.5 million people took a cruise here last year, 6% more than in 2015.

“I can see every reason for the European cruise economy to continue to grow at this rate.  Even with 7 million cruises sold, European market penetration is no more than 2% of the total population whilst for North America and Australia that figure is closer to 4%.  The new orders destined for Europe will drive a new surge in demand.

Whilst the conference area was busy, the showfloor was also vibrant more than 2,700 attendees from 105 countries anticipated over the two days with plenty of exhibitor activities including: A Taste of Portugal networking events hosted by Cruise Portugal; a Cruise Europe Happy Hour; Caribbean Village ‘A Taste of the Tropics’ Welcome Reception and Region Sud Provence French Riviera Cocktail Reception.

Seatrade Cruise Med is held biennially and is this year hosted by the Port of Lisbon Authority with principal sponsor and supporter, MedCruise (The Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports), of which Lisbon has been a member since 2000.

Principal regional sponsors include: República Portuguesa-Mar; Lisboa Câmara Municipal; Turismo de Portugal; Turismo de Lisboa; Lisbon Cruise Port; ANA Aeroportas de Portugal.

Sponsors include: Andalucía – Costa de Almeria; Caribbean Village; Delta Cafés; Docapesca; DP World; Gibraltar Tourist Board; Global Ports Holding; Greek National Tourism Organisation;  Intercruises Shoreside & Port Services; Pasteis De Belém; Qatar Tourism Authority; Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur; ViaVerde and Wärtsilä.

Supporters include: Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA).   Official Carrier is TAP Air Portugal; The Media Sponsor is: BBC World News; Official Hotel is Olissipo Hotels; Mercy Ships is the Seatrade Cruise Med Chosen Charity; Sustainability Partner is EPAL; Seatrade Cruise Med is part of Portugal Shipping Week.

  • How the industry is turning to new technologies and innovations

There will also be a series of Headway Talks which concentrate on pertinent topics impacting the industry.

As well as numerous networking opportunities on the showfloor with destinations providing a sample of their own unique tastes and sounds, there are some new initiatives that include: an immersive experience dome, brought to Lisbon by Immersive Adventures, where a series of presentations will take place in a 10x10m dome!

On Day 2, an exciting addition to the programme will be the unveiling of the finalists in the ‘20 under 40’ competition, which was launched by Seatrade Cruise News and sponsored by TVG Travel, to find 20 professionals from the global cruise industry who are under the age of 40 and already proved to be extraordinary at work!

The announcement and presentation of the final 20 will take place on the 20th September at 13:20-14:20 at the Excellence Theatre on the showfloor. The finalists will be presented with a certificate and invited on stage to have a chat with the judges including Craig Milan, VP Itinerary Planning & Destination Development of Virgin Voyages and Mary Bond, Editor of Seatrade Cruise News, on what motivates them and drives their success.

A highlight of the two days will also be the Seatrade Cruise Awards. Now in its twelfth year, Seatrade Cruise Awards continue to recognise and reward the very best of international cruise achievement and act as a catalyst for driving the continuous improvement of standards across the industry.
