William MacLachlan

Senior Associate, HFW

William MacLachlan, Senior Associate, HFW

As the cruise fleet grows following the change of tastes and expectations, it is getting harder to sell older cruise ships for onwards trading, which opens up to the question on how to recycle those end of life vessels. The focus on such matters is likely to intensified in light of the increasing scrutiny by the European Union and its Member States of ship recycling, together with the growing confidence of the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, which has led to a number of recent high profile claims against and prosecutions of ship owners following their disposal of end of life tonnage to Asian recyclers. More claims and prosecutions are expected.

In this session, the speaker will look to explore the current regulatory landscape, the likely developments in the near future and what cruise lines can do to ensure they do not join the growing ranks of ship owners falling foul of public perception and the law.
