About Abu Dhabi

  • Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates
  • The local currency is UAE dirham (AED or Dhs), but credit cards and debit cards are widley accepted
  • The UAE is four hours ahead of GMT
  • A Friday / Saturday weekend operates across the region

In an emergency

  • In the event of an emergency, the Abu Dhabi Police can be reached by 999
  • In a medical emergency, there are two hospitals operating with A&E units, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (+971 2 610 2000) and Al Noor Hospital (+971 2 626 5265)
  • You must have medical insurance cover when visiting the UAE

Other key information

  • Arabic is the official language of Abu Dhabi, although English is widley spoken. You can find a useful phrase book¬†here
  • You will need a square three-pin adapter (standard in the UK) when using electric sockets¬†
  • Taxi's are plentiful in Abu Dhabi, but you can book over the phone through the TransAD hotline (+971 600 535353)
